The Status of Environment in China
These 30 years have witness an increasing environmental problems in China along with its rapid economic development. China's worsening environmental problems, in particular, emerged in recent years. For example, sandstorms, polluted air, the outbreak of cyan bacteria, blizzard and floods etc. Such extreme weathers happen frequently and draw dramatic concern from the public and the government, who has to be aware of China¡¯s worsening environmental problems.
1. The situation of water resource pollution
In June 2008, State Environmental Protection Administration issued ¡°Environmental Situation in China 2007¡±. This report shows a clearer description of China's current environmental situation in general. In the inspection of 500 cities, more than half of acid rain was recorded in these cities. Only 197 rivers in China are less than half can be used for drinking, swimming or aquaculture. Five of the seven major river systems are under severe pollution.
Worldwatch Institute released "Report On The World Situation" pointing out: The world's 20 most polluted cities; China possesses 16, at the same time there are about 300 Chinese cities facing serious water shortage.
In 2007, Pan Yue, Deputy Minister of State Environmental Protection Administration said "There are still 360 million rural populations in the country who can not enjoy the standardized drinking water. Pesticides, chemical fertilizers, polluted water are existing at a huge amount, there are 1.5 million mu of arable land has been contaminated, the environmental protection facilities in rural areas are basically zero."
2. The situation of air pollution
In June 2008, State Environmental Protection Administration issued ¡°Environmental Situation in China 2007¡±. The report demonstrates that nearly 40% of medium-sized cities are ranked as Level 3 which means the pollution of this degree may lead to some serious symptoms of healthy group and susceptible group of population or aggravate these symptoms of certain diseases.
Worldwatch Institute released "Report On The World Situation" indicating that China faces some of the world's most serious environmental challenges.
©÷ China's 385 species are listed as endangered species.
©÷ China's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over the past decade grew rapidly; China is now the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases. It is estimated that in 2006, burning of fossil fuels and manufacturing cement had led to 6.2 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
©÷ China's air quality is health-risky for the public. It is estimated that there were 400 thousand people died from respiratory infections, and the air pollution was the direct cause of disease.
China's rapid economic development is mainly built on a high consumption of resources. International Energy Agency in the "World Energy Outlook 2007," pointed out: China's coal consumption is 38% of the world in total. China is the world's largest timber and tropical timber importing country. However, it should be noted that China is the world's "factory". After being processed in China, these resources will be exported to every corner of the world, remaining the greenhouse gas and pollution in China.
3. Environmental pollution restrict economic development
China's environmental crisis has affected the entire country's economic development and international image, as well as the lives of every citizen and even their survival. The target is (1) Energy resources consumption of each unit production value should lessen 20% in five years. (2) The amount of emission of main pollutant should reduce 10% within five years. (3) Decrease the average accretion speed of GDP from 9.5% into 7.5%.
2. The Pearl River Delta has huge environmental protection business opportunity
The Pearl River Delta with the praise of ¡°The World Factory¡± is the manufacture industry base with fastest global economic accretion, while, it is also one of the worst pollution areas in China.
